THE TAXI SKIDDED around the corner, onto a slushy side street in Södermalm. The car stopped in front of a nondescript entrance along a long brick building. I opened the door and stepped out into the cold. Somewhere along the ride from the airport, the sun had set, though it was only early afternoon. The streetlights glowed, and the sidewalk was padded with a thin layer of newly fallen snow.

The taxi driver set my little suitcase on the curb and took off, leaving me to fend for myself in front of Jonas’s building. I looked one way down the empty street, then the other. What were the chances of getting another taxi on Christmas Eve in Stockholm if he wasn’t home? Or if he slammed the door in my face? Maybe I should have just done things his way and taken him up on his plane ticket offer. But then the visit would be on his terms. Again.

Jonas made it clear I shouldn’t come for Christmas, and he still hadn’t told me why. So I had come anyway. On Christmas Eve. In case he was serious enough about his anti-Christmas stance that I needed to find a hotel room. Not that finding a room would be easy on a night like this.

And if I ruined everything between us by pushing back against his limits? It was better to know that now, before we got in deeper. If my mother had stood up for what she wanted years earlier, maybe her life wouldn’t have ended up such a mess.

I scanned the windows of the building in front of me, lit with stars, lights and electric candles. Which apartment was Jonas’s? His letters had described a view of a courtyard, but there was no courtyard in sight. Just a quiet wall of brick with windows in neat rows. Maybe this wasn’t even the right place. I pulled out my phone, checked the address one more time, and took a deep breath. Showtime.

A cold gust of wind wrapped around my bare hands, seeping through my jeans and finding its way into my boots. Best to just get this over with.

I dialed Jonas’s number.

“Alice?”

“Um, hi,” I said.

The line was silent.

“Alice. It’s you,” he finally said. “Is everything okay?”

His voice sounded strange, off, and his accent was more pronounced than I remembered.

I took a deep breath. “I have a bit of a surprise for you.”

“What is it?”

The words came out all slurred together. Something was definitely off. If my feet weren’t currently numbing over, I might have even turned around.

“I’m here in Stockholm,” I said.

He muttered something incomprehensible, and then the line went silent. Did he hang up on me? I checked the screen of my phone. No, he was still there.

“Where are you?” He didn’t sound the least bit happy to hear from me. Maybe even mad.

Well, what was I expecting? It was better that I found this out right away. How many times had I told myself that today?

“Alice?” His voice was softer now.
